Frequently asked questions

   1. I've heard of rope access for building repairs, but what is it?

Rope access is a safe system of work and an alternative to scaffolding, that allows qualified operators to descend/ascend on twin lines from fixed points on a building, allowing them to carry out works where there is limited access or the cost of scaffolding is prohibitive.

   2. Is it dangerous?

It may look dangerous, but rope access has very strict regulations and standards that are governed by the HSE. There are a number of industry trade bodies, with IRATA being the most recognisable. Its is seen as the industry standard here in the UK. Our technicians all hold IRATA qualifications and a number hold qualifications for emergency rescue and confined space rescue.  All employees are also trained in advanced first aid.

   3. Why wouldn't I just use scaffolding?

Scaffolding is always going to be required for building repairs however it is expensive, and for small jobs such as painting a downpipe or removing a small tree that has started to grow out of your building, it is just not cost effective.

A number of locations, especially in Edinburgh, have very limited access to the rear of properties. Scaffolding is usually required to be carried through the ground floor property, which is often inconvenient and messy for the owner. With rope access, we just need access to the roof and we can get to work.

   4. Can rope access be used on my property?

Often the answer is a YES! We will always ask to see the roof and look for places to anchor our ropes from. There are a number of different locations and options we can utilise, but we will always let you know.

   5. Do I need special insurance?

No, we have full public liability cover.

   6. Does it cost me anything for someone to take a look at my problem?

No, we offer free quotations.

   7. My gutters are quite fragile, won't the ropes running over them damage them more?

No. Through research and development we have personally designed a number of edge transition devices that cannot be found anywhere on the market. These devices allow us to totally bypass ropes passing over fragile gutters and walls.
